Discovery and exploration of enzymes for Morita-Baylis-Hillman reactions

Host/Lead University: University of Groningen
Main Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gerrit J. Poelarends
Secondments: University of Zagreb; Georg-August-Universität Göttingen; Enzymicals AG

I started my scientific journey with a BSc in Biotechnology, followed by an MSc in Molecular and Applied Biotechnology, specialising in chemical engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Throughout my studies I have been able to gain insight into different areas of biocatalysis. From the characterisation of enzymes and their application in biotransformations to the use of whole-cell catalysts in enzyme cascades, enzymes never cease to amaze me with their capabilities. I have particularly enjoyed being part of a sustainability cluster and the company of like-minded people who share my curiosity and enthusiasm. My scientific interest has been piqued by the wide variety of reaction systems and the scale-up of reactions to produce desired components in large quantities. Outside the lab, I enjoy hiking and various forms of painting and crafting. In addition to my interest in taking up new hobbies and learning new things, I can get really enthusiastic about my aversion to cinnamon. My goal for the time after the doctoral network is to continue working on topics that inspire me and to be part of the movement that leads to a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
