What a night! On the evening of October 26th, our DCs from the University of Groningen (Simon Schröder, Carina Kipp, Annika Hein, Alexander Argyrou) represented #BiodeCCodiNNg at the European Researcher’s Night – an annual, #Europe-wide event to take science out of the lab and present it to people of all ages curious about science.

Our team had a hands-on (and glasses-on!) exhibit about the use of structural biology and #enzyme engineering to drive sustainable pharmaceutical research. People got to perform “in-plastico” (to a 3D printed model) and “in-virtuo” (with #VR glasses in a virtual environment powered by Nanome) substrate docking, letting them explore the three-dimensional protein structures, learning about the vast variety of tasks enzymes perform to sustain all forms of life and experiencing the tools scientists use to get an enzyme from nature all the way to biotechnological applications.

We strongly believe it is our responsibility as scientists to communicate our research also in a way that speaks to everyone, not just our peers who work in research. Using stories of real-world, relatable examples, presenting them in an accessible way employing modern methods must lead to more societal understanding in a time where the global trust in science and scientists is challenged on a daily basis. Public events like the European Researcher’s Night are ideal platforms for this, so we would like to thank the organizers and everyone who attended!
