From February 7th to 9th, #BiodeCCodiNNgโ€™s doctoral candidates were in #Groningen, The Netherlands, for the “๐„๐ฆ๐๐Ž๐–๐„๐‘๐ž๐ ๐†๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ ๐„๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ/๐ƒ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ & ๐Œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ” ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ The first day, the DCs counted on insightful discussions with Dรถrte Rother, Dirk Tischler, and Sandy Schmidt on working-life balance and strategies to harmonize family life and a career in science. Our invited speaker from the University of Groningen, Professor Lucy Avraamidou, shared her view on networking, emphasizing the importance of “building your own village” and community inside and outside work. The day ended with a fun and interactive workshop on presentation skills led by Eva Pantelakis.

โšง On day two, Dr. Sandy Schmidt presented eye-opening data highlighting inequalities in science. The DCs had the chance to identify and discuss gender equality, diversity, and biases in academia through two case studies guided by Professor Gerrit Poelarends and Dr. Sandy Schmidt. Last, the students received guidance on how to make the most of BiodeCCodiNNg’s mentorship program.

๐Ÿฆญ On the final day, we visited the Sealcentre Pieterburen. It was a great opportunity for everyone to bond while learning about the amazing work being done to help and rescue seals in the Wadden Sea.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿค Thank you to the DCs for active participation and everyone who played a part in making this workshop a success! We hope it has provided our DCs with invaluable tools to thrive in academia while championing diversity, equality, and mentorship.
